Yaman from Light Classical Angle

Yaman encompasses everything, from Bollywood to Natya Sangeet to Ghazal to Bhav Geet and everything in between. During this episode, we will look at Yaman’s light classical profile. And stick to stalwarts. Many artists have traversed the path paved by artists such as Mehdi Hasan, Farida Khanum, Abhishekibuwa and Kumar Gandharv. And that is what we will do, stick to these four and find our Yaman path in the light shown by the “Diggaj” artists.

Our first stalwart is Mehdi Hassan Saab. A fully trained classical singer, who later turned his attention to Ghazals, was a true pioneer. He brought soulful singing and classicism to Ghazals. And his most famous Ghazal is indeed Yaman based. Ranjish Hi Sahi.

We will then trade the path paved by yet another Diggaj, Farid Khanum. Again, one of her most famous songs is Yaman based, Aaj Jane Ki Jid Na Karo.

Abhishekibuwa single-handedly turned around Marathi stage music, Natya Sangeet, in the 60s. His tunes are always did full justice to the words and the mood. We will first listen to a Tarana composed by buwa for Naatak Katya Kaljat Ghusali, and adapted in the movie based on that Naatak. And continue with him, with famous Devagharache Dnyaat Kunala, a live performance by himself.

We will end with none other than Kumar Gandharva. And the Natya Sangeet I have chosen is of couse Yaman based; but I would like to draw your attention to the taal, which is called Gandharva Theka.
